The mission of Northbrook District 28 is to provide a teaching, learning, caring environment where all children benefit from a commitment to excellence. The district goal is to improve achievement for all students. Research supports standards-based reporting as a basis of communication that will help students learn more effectively through meaningful feedback. By adopting a standards-based report card the district will provide a consistent grading approach K-8.

About Standards-Based Reporting

In a standards-based system, teachers report what students know and are able to do in relation to the state and national standards. Each reporting period marks a new beginning and provides an opportunity to reflect upon past work habits. Most importantly, it is a time for parents to partner with their child and teacher to determine pathways for future academic and social growth. The standards-based report card encourages student reflection and responsibility.

1. Clear and consistent expectations for what students are learning 
2. Provides clear communication and expectations regarding student progress toward trimester learning standards that is accurate, fair, specific and timely
3. Separates work habits and behavior from academic skills.
4. Shifts the focus toward mastery of essential learning standards and away from the accumulation of points toward a grade on a report card
5. Provides more targeted instruction based on students' strengths and weaknesses.
6. Encourages students to reflect on and take responsibility for their own learning
